A nifty tool was recently handed to me that could affect your standings in the search engines. Seems that the point would be moot if you are working hard to optimize your search engine positioning, only to become listed as a 'sp@m' site.
There are many methods a web site designer can embed into web design code.
What are they? Well, it is many things. It could be keyword stuffing, doorway farms and hidden text.
Some of these tricks could be inserted at your request, but then again, some may inserted without your even knowing about it.
Is it ethical? Not for me to say. I'll leave that up to the forum and the community to decide.
Here is a link to a tool that analyzes a web page, searching for characteristics that search engines could consider spam.

I ran one of my domain names through the system that is using a 'free' mambo template and found this bit of information:
Invisible text found. Method(s): Same text and background colors. Hardly visible text using very similar text and background colors.
Invisibility purpose: Impossible to say.

I'm now switching templates to see what is included in some of the 'paid for' templates that I didn't request.
Do your own test on your own websites, and see what comes up. It just may give you food for thought.
