Any chance of releasing a variable width version and making the center column span to the right when the left column is empty?

Look in your module manager. Choose the module which is containing your menu. In the parameters set "expand menu" to "yes".

I like this idea, but I'd rather something that integrated the top header with the forum. For some a community based forum is the main raison d'être and to see the header display differently from the main site can become disconcerting. But doing this with a cms and not having the forum wrapped in 3/4 of the site (instead of the entire width) seems difficult.
