Default Directory Component

hey all:

so i've been searching for a good directory that I can use sort of like a Yellow Pages for local businesses. since i haven't found anything and phil taylor has taken his directory down from sale, i was looking to build my own. so far i have gotten the following ideas about what information it should hold and features it should have.

What information needs to be stored?

Name of Business
Address
Neighborhood
Phone #
Website
Hours of Operation
Type of Business

Should be...
- searchable
- able to sort by name/avg. rating
- AkoComment integradable
- registered users should be able to add a business

Any suggestions? Is this even possible to do?

Someone wrote a directory component a few months ago that was GPL...but I can't find it anywhere. I think I have it on my machine at work. If you can wait until Tuesday, I will send it to you. If nothing else, you can look at how it is written, or maybe even build from what he already has.

If you're going to have users add their own businesses to the Directory, I recommend you build a review process whereby the Admin can review all new entries before being posted, similar to AkoComments. Otherwise, people are going to post outlandish business descriptions about their own businesses.

Recommendations:
- Allow users to upload a business logo
- Most importantly, I'd include a paid sponsored-link or priority position system in the Directory, where users can move their ads to the top of their Categories. Integrate some kind of PayPal payment system where users can buy priority listings one a weekly or monthly basis.

I like the logo idea a lot. And the 2nd idea is very good as well, the only thing is this is going to be my first component so it will be a very long time before i get this finished. i'm probably going to be snipping from other components...but if anyone would like to help it'd be appreciated

BTW. Mark the link in your signature is broken

How many times did you actually click on it before drawing that conclusion????

Sorry to disappoint you...but I can't find the zip file anywhere. I'm not 100% sure I downloaded it...maybe I just saw it on a demo site. The guy posted it on the mamboserver.com forums...but I can't find hide nor hair of it now. What a shame.

I recommend you look at the following components for ideas:

moskools
mambads
partystaff
accombo
wines
artistdirectory

I can also set you up with access to a demo of Phil's directory component if you want to eval the functionality of it. Sorry I can't do more to help you.

dknight, this looks VERY good!
I'd have bought it if it was customizable for all texts!
(to be used to present for example software or websites..)
Looks great
