Default [week 01] Is the addons list complete?

Hi everybody,

this week I pick up the ball from eyezberg and would like talk about the list of free and commercial addons for Mambo. Currently there are hundreds of components and modules available, both free and commercial. So everybody should be able to do everything he likes with Mambo.

But is this true? Does every component needed already has been developed? If yes, are you satisfied with the currently available solutions? And if not, what component or modules do you badly miss?

Thanks for your many comments.

A "presentation" component, where nothing is hard-coded, users can add fields/images/links etc as needed (like in Community Builder) to display all sorts of products and or people. Something like a mix of a directory, gallery, product list..
So I could use one instance to show people with a thumbnail (portrait) and if needed, book covers of their writings, or records, or tutorials or whatever, then other fields like name, site, etc etc.. something very configurable and flexible, multi-usage. MambelFish enabled "de préférence"

Then some global "community" project for tight integration of forum, PMs, user profile, user (home/blog/..)pages, user articles, so you need only one profile for the forum, community builder, mambo etc, and the whole user details are accessible from there (configurable of course, 1.by admin 2.by user)... maybe add "reputation", own gallery etc etc..

I'd really like to see a module or tool that would allow the insertion of Flash video or audio objects inside content.

I really miss your gallery component Arthur while it needed some tweaking I think it was the best truly integrated gallery and still would be if it was 4.5.1 compatible.

Also maybe a component kinda like akocomment but made for review sites where the users can post their own reviews below the sites review. Including things like how much they paid, the good points and the bad points all in their own little header then there main body of text below them.

Here is my two cents:

1- No disrespect to existing gallery components but I believe Mambo deserves a more developed gallery component. I tried almost all of the existing ones; each has unique features, but lack some other necessary frontend/backend functions. Coppermine is great, but it isn't "really" a mambo compent and doesn't really fit right.

2- I wish there was an intranet/ groupware compenent for Mambo. When I say groupware what I have in mind is something that has Outlook functions and a few more: such as multi account pop/imap email capability, tasks/reminders, notes, personal/shared calendar, instant/private messaging etc. (Of course a file mager, but Docman already does that well enough.) If I could find a coponent that does all these then I could make a website which looks like any other website to my visitors, and functions as an intranet+groupware to my members/users. I tried several groupware applications such as moregroupware or e-groupware. (Although it is not necessarily known as a "groupware application" I even tried Horde, which I prefer to first two.) They all work fine but, don't really go with mambo that well.

And yes, I don't know how to write a code. I wish I'd known, then I'd definetely write a groupware component.

Regards.

I'd like to see a component that created SEF URL's that didn't require an Apache server with mod rewrite to work. E.g I use WebStar V server on OS 10.3.7.

I'd also like to see components that can send e-cards, partners, referals, job announcements etc like there are now but improved so they allow for a SMTP Server to be specified in their backend admin. Only a small fraction do at the moment.

Just to be greedy a component to allow users to create their own websites & blogs that works with a core install (not requiring HTML Extended or some other editor that doesn't work on OS X). Tiny MCE works great under OS X (both Safari & FireFox).

it would be nice to have a full xhtml/css compliant replacement for the content component , also supporting definable colums ( instead of leading/intro/... eg top 2 rows have 3 columns , then the next row is full width , then the next row has 2 columns , followed by 10 links ).
also for the menu system : a replacement for the "component link" , which would allow to choose a task

mkoeings: exists since today: http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=26896 commercial, $60, but it's something I've been waiting for since last december..

krime81: the "definable columns for fontpage" is a great idea, please add to wishlist on mamboserver forums!
about component+task link, I guess you can manually change the generated link in the database to include the params needed to access the task for now, i think it would require one more page (or tab to select on the right): menu> new>component>task.. nice idea too

Hi Arthur
Why not start upgrading your CM's like AkoStaff or AkoGallery to 4.5.1a like you have promised for last autumn?

Another thing I would appreciate in general is a certain planning reliability. Often interesting projects for some components or modules look very promising in the beginning, but after some alpha-versions, the developing process stalls and stable versions take forever.
I know that all developers would like to kill me now because they are doing this job all in their spare time, free of charge and with heart and soul, not to mention all technical problems and setbacks.
But please also remember that Mambo is increasingly used for professional projects, and those projects usually have a deadline and should be finished on time. Therefore it would be very helpful to have some reliable and regular project-status infos on CMT's. This would then allow me to plan my website-project accordingly and to look for alternatives on time if p.ex. the project has to be finished in a month but the favored component will only be reasonably stable in 6 month.

Ok, now start beating..;-)
