Default column sorting on all tables

I'd like to have the option of adding sort functionality to any/every column (field) in any data table (as opposed to table used just for formatting) displayed in either the front end or the administrator end.

In the administrator end I suggest that when viewing the list of content items (e.g. news, articles) the first screen is simply a list -- without Reorder arrows on the right. It would be REALLY nice if this had a couple more columns like "date created", "date last edited". We should be able to click on any of the column (field) headings to sort by that field (click again to reverse sort). Ordering of the items for the front end would then be done a separate screen. In that screen, a specific order should be just one of the options; order by date, title etc. should also be available. Then there should also be an option to allow the user to choose the sort order, again by making the column titles clickable and when you click on the title the table is sorted by that field.

Does this make sense? If you use the Browse table feature of phpMyAdmin, you'll see what I'm talking about with the clickable headings.
