I tried the following:
setting the syndicat module to published->this puts the "RSS on your desktop blabla" on the right of my page.
I set some newsfeeds such as "linuxtoday" to published but no news on my site alas!
questions:
1) Is there something I missed?
2) I saw something here about magic quotes etc. Could this be the case?
3) How can I check this?

The syndicate module makes YOUR news available in RSS format so others could get it and display it on their site.

The module that displays the external feeds are the mod_newsfeeds, there is also a mod_newsfeeds_scroller available that scrolls the displayed news in the module box. It is great to display a lot of news on a smaller box than the normal mod_newsfeeds would use. I use it on my site, www.pkf107.no and it works great.

Do you have magic_qutoes set 'on'

People have posted that they have had problems with Newfeeds when it is set to on.

Man! I feel stupid. I published the syndicate module instead of the newsfeeds module. Thanks for the tip and sorry for bothering you with such a stupid question.
