Question Installing Modules

Hello all I am pretty new to Mambo but not at all new to CMS and I am having trouble with something that I hope someone can help out with.

Modules and installations of them. Some you can upload in the compressed format and they pretty much load them selves. The one that I am confused about are ones like MOSHOST.

I try to upload in its compressed format, but it tells me Installation file is not a module installation file. Ok so what do I do with theses type modules, am I just missing something here? I could not find any documentation on this.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Default Re: Installing Modules

MOShost is a component. "Installation file is not a module installation file" is the tip off. Usually, modules start with the prefix "mod_****.zip" and components "com_****.zip", but in this case, it is unclear. Another thing to consider is that modules usually are just for displaying information...if there is data input required, it is probably a comonent.

Ok I am going to ask a noob question here. Can someone explain the difference between a Module and a Component? What makes them different? Is there a document that would be benificial for a noob to read about mambo's structure?

The official manual can be found here: http://mosforge.net/projects/mosdoc45/

It would definitely be worth looking over. Also, if you haven't already made the rounds...be sure to check out the downloads sections at mamboportal.com and corephp.com. For templates, visit mambohut.com. The new template gallery is a must see! Also, spend some time familiarizing yourself with mosforge.net as the projects available there are updated with the most current file versions.

Components are the various php scripts that collect data, perform actions and display the results. They have their own content pages and are linked to from the main menu.

Modules are basically viewing boxes for data that is collected through the components. Also, modules can be typed content or self contained mini-apps. They cannot be edited from the front end and can appear on any or all pages.

Hope this helps.
