MOS thumb errors around class.img2thumb.inc

Have been trying to make MOSthumb work on my site (recently updated to joomla 1.04
(Mosthumb has always worked in the past)
Typical errors that I am getting now:
Warning: imagegif(): Unable to access /data/in/c/xxxx/www/joomla/mambots/content/mosthumb/thumbs/image2.gif in /data/in/c/xxxx/www/joomla/mambots/content/mosthumb/class.img2thumb.inc on line 225

Did a google search and found a myriad of sites around the world using Mosthumb with the same error. :-)

This as far as I got --

You have to Touch() a file prior to
create_image jpg and create_image gif

( I will look up the specifics )
this creates a temp file prior to Mosthumb creating
it -- and populates the thumbs directory..

Still - the thumbs do not appear on the pages
in question.
I spoke with Manni who is the developer of MOS_Thumb
and he did not indicate that he was spending much time
with Mos_Thumb -- more on his commercial product - which is OK

since i have changed my php-version to 5.1 everything works fine.
