I just installed the "Custom 404" component...it got me thinking about something that would be *really cool* if Mambo provided it.
Here's the idea:
I'd like to be able to create a filename to associate with any page on my web site.
Let's say
www.mydomain.com/mypage.html could index directly to
http://www.mydomain.com/mambo/index....tpage&Itemid=1.
In a perfect world, I'd like a component that would allow me to create any number of page names and the reference "real" pages in my site. This is known as "redirection" for those of you not familiar with the term.
This function would be super useful when I transition an "old" site that's already indexed online to my new one so people visiting my "new" site with an existing link won't have any problems finding it. It would also be useful for search engine optimization purposes as well.
And furthermore, wouldn't it be nice if you could just provide someone with a nice short filename like "www.yourdomain.com/offer/" if you were running an advertisement or something like that?
Ideally, I'd like the interface to allow me to set up the links by importing "old" ones and then use a link tool much like you'd see in one of the current editors like htmlarea3_xtd-c to link to my current pages (so I don't have to type in the URL).
And even better, it would be great if we could just add an additional tab in the page creation portion of Mambo so 1-n number of "aliases" could be created for that page. Yup, not just one, but potentially several.
I hope this makes sense...
Take a look at this product/link:

This guy has something very similar to what I'm thinking about but it's not a mambo module.
I'd be willing to make a contribution to the effort if someone would take this on! The 404 component has the basics already there...the stuff that's left is really setting up a database for the entries and then hacking Mambo's editor page.
