Default Free Mambo hosting with Tripod

Using tripod uk I uploaded mambo os (first enabling php4u) which went ok
and I ran the installation program.

This worked fine apart from one part. Now i can have the mambo defualt
webpage displaying but I am unable to add any components of module

Has anyone overcome this problem? if do how?

It may be a permissions problem not allowing Mambo write access to the directories. I have never used/seen Tripods setup, do they have something where you can modify permissions on directories and files? If so check the permissions guide in the install docs and see if the are correct.

It would appear it wont let you do something and its a pain.

I have managed to install new templates by unpacking them on my computer
then just FTPing them into the templates folder.

I tried this with a module but i didnt know where to put the xml file???
even if i did im not sure it would work what normally happens? when you
install a module

I did the same for a component (akogallery) but even though i put the files
in the right place it wouldnt work.

I was wondering if it would work if i built the site on a working site then
backed it up and transfer it to tripod. ( i have a site i can do this with.)

what problems would i encounter just uploading the files? would it be able to work with some tweaks?

Templates work fine doing it that way but modules and components require a little more. I would think You could install any of them manualy but there will be more to it than just uploading the files. Remember Mambo is database driven and the modules/components you install will most likely need to have there own tables etc in the database.

You would end up with permission problems again if you ftp the site from another site if you have no way of controling permissions. Also the database would need to be restored on the tripod server.

Hmm i knew it would be nigh on impossible to do.

Do you think it would be possible to modify the installation files of the mambo
install zip to include some extra components and modules?

Say add akogallery, remository, simpleboard, shoutit and the related mods
(plus other useful ones)

As the components and modules built in work fine. I guess it might not be as simple as this but maybe somethings may work.

Kind of like a linux distro.

Can it be done? has anyone done it before?

When i install mambo the welcome screen says everything is ok EXCEPT
Session save path which says "NOT SET, Unwriteable" what does this mean
and is there anyway around it?

have you checked the chmod values of the admin, modules and components folders? Most folders should be set to 755 and files to 644, hope it helps.
