Arrow Content Structuring Basics for Newbies, MOS 4.5

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else before, but after months of working on and off with Mambo - I have yet to see it in a simple, 1,2,3 do this, then do that format. This is for anyone that's never done anything with Mambo, and needs an answer besides "go look at the docs on mosforge.net blah blah". This little guide also assumes that MyMenu's component has been installed. I don't know if it'll be the same with other systems.

Step by step way on how to structure content in Mambo.

1. Content -> Add / Edit Sections. Create a new section -> "My Cars"
2. Content -> My Cars -> Categories. Create A Category for My Cars -> Personal Vehicles.
Content -> My Cars -> Categories. Create another category for My Cars -> Recreational Vehicles.
(Second cat is optional obviously)
3. Content -> My Cars -> Items. Create a typed content Item for My Cars. Say, My Ford Pick Up Truck. (Title to be My Ford Pick Up? You decide)
Select the category this item is going to be in (Personal Vehicles).
There are two text boxes for all content items. In about 99% of all cases you're going to only use the top text box.
IMPORTANT: If you want the article about your truck to be more than one page, insert the tag: {mospagebreak}
wherever you want the page to break at. You can put as many pagebreaks in the article as you want.
4. Save the item.
5. Content -> Add/Edit Sections. PUBLISH YOUR NEW SECTION.
6. Content -> My Cars -> Categories. PUBLISH YOUR CATEGORY.
7. Content -> My Cars -> Items. PUBLISH YOUR ITEMS.
8. Components -> MyMenus -> NEW (at top of page). "ADD A MENU" Enter name of New Menu Item -> My Cars.
9. Components -> My Menus -> My Cars -> NEW (at top of page):
Add A Menu Item
Select Content SECTION -> NEXT (If you get an error that says All available sections have been used, then you haven't published the SECTION: Go back to Item 5 above: Individual Categories and Items being published or not will not cause this error.)
10. Select My Cars SECTION.
11. Enter Desired Info in boxes and Finish.
12. Modules -> Manage Modules
13. Select from the dropdown in the upper right corner to display 25 items in the list, (unless you have less than this).
14. Find My Cars.
15. Click on the RED X (Publish). It will change to the published icon.
Now go to your site preview and you should see your new menu item listed as "My Cars". If you click on it, it will bring up the published categories in the main window. Select your category and item to view.
This is just the basic method for creating structured content the Mambo way. By publishing an entire section under one link.
There are other things you can do to the menu item on the left at this point. Go back into Modules, click on My Cars and you'll see the details for that menu item. (Module in this case= Menu Item). You can select not to display the title of the module, you can select on which pages that this menu item will show up, (in most cases it will be all pages, but this function is VERY POWERFUL, because you can create an entirely different set of menu items to appear in different sections of the website). You can change the MODULE ORDER... For non-techno types, this is actually the MENU ORDER. If you select 1::Main Menu, then it will override the Main Menu and push it down on the display... (Both to the user and in the admin module/menu listing).

There are several different ways to do these things... for instance, with that same SECTION that you created, you can make your own intro page to this section, and link to categories, items.. etc. Here's how to do it....

With the newly created section, (Steps 1-7 Complete as above):
8. Components -> MyMenus -> NEW (at top of page). "ADD A MENU" Enter name of New Menu Item -> Cool Cars.
9. Components -> My Menus -> Cool Cars -> NEW (at top of page):
Add A Menu Item
Select Typed Content -> NEXT (If you get an error that says All available sections have been used, then you haven't published the SECTION: Go back to Item 5 above: Individual Categories and Items being published or not will not cause this error.)
10. Enter in the titles/aliases (Cool Cars/Cool Cars).
11. Type in some stuff here to intro your Cool Cars.
12. Finish.
13. Click the RED X (Publish). It will change to the published icon.
14. Modules -> Manage Modules
15. Select from the dropdown in the upper right corner to display 25 items in the list, (unless you have less than this).
16. Find Cool Cars.
17. Click on the RED X (Publish). It will change to the published icon.

We're Not done yet! Now you have a menu item on the front page for Cool Cars and your intro text. (This intro text can/should be changed later after you get the url's to your sub content).

18. Components -> MyMenus -> Cool Cars.
19. Cool Cars is the only thing listed on the page since it hasn't had anything added to it yet.
20. Select NEW (at top of page).
Select Add a Content Category.
Select a category you want to display under this: eg -> My Cars/Personal Vehicles.
Select the PARENT ITEM from the drop down, Cool Cars.
Select SAVE (At Top of Page).
21. Your Menu Items for Cool Cars are now displayed.
Publish BOTH MENU ITEMS.
22. Now go to your front page and take a looksee.

Whew.

If this thing has missed a step my apologies, I'll fix it!

Surely though, there's gotta be more info like this for mambo someplace! (In the mambo for dummies format as above!).

As a new user, I appreciate people providing instructions. I also found some of the tutorials helpful.

Of course, the other resource I'd love to see is a visual FAQ For people, such as myself, who aren't programmers, seeing a demo is wonderful. As example, I've read a number of posts removing the Hits counter and still can't get it right. Borrowing from Mr. Edison, I can successfully tell you a half dozen ways that don't work.

However, if someone can successfully step me through this task, I will volunteer to make a flash demo so the next time someone asks.....

YVW Unfortunately, not a single tutorial, or a single post I've seen anywhere gives the step by step version, start to finish in a quick and easy to digest format. And I've been over that (208K??) pdf tutorial numerous times only to ditch mambo before I even got started last year - yikes, something direct and to the point please! And while there are a few posts with some step-by-step processes, but they only address the middle of the things. Nothing from top to bottom completely. I hope that with time more folks that are knowledgeable with Mambo will have the time to provide tutorials like this in a simple line by line fashon.

Also, it would be a good idea if Mambers created another forum category with HOW TO answer posts only. Not questions for how to's as in this forum category here. A How To remository if you will. I hope this thing helps someone. It would've saved me lots of scratching my head!

Cheers.

MOS 4.5 Re: Content Structuring Basics for Newbies, MOS 4.5

Yes I've seen all of the tutorials, they're quite slick too. But understanding Content Structure with Mambo is the most critical to those of us packing 200+ page categorized / sectionized html websites from previous years, looking for a new system, which is why I created this written tutorial, hoping to help those that don't have time to figure it out from scratch. Unfortunately, the adding content flash tutorial doesn't address the most important issue to us 'static content providers' and purveyors of information on the internet.

Likewise, structured content providers like myself (I'm not a mambo guy as my business is in selling physical products online) usually don't need a "News" section either. Man there must be some awful hangover coming from the phpnuke strains... (rss? Newsfeeds? News flash? ) We don't need to have a community information site with news and whatnot goings on in our local township, (Nor would I ever put a news feed with the latest sports scores on my sites, my customers can go to espn.com for that) we need a way to RE-CREATE our existing content logically, and get it figured out quickly - and let the mambo system take care of the hard stuff, so we can get back to doing what we do best. Create new content in the structure easily, and sell more stuff.

Cheers.

Mamster, would you mind if we used some of your posting here in the official manuals.

Default Re: Content Structuring Basics for Newbies, MOS 4.5

I was wondering if somebody has thought about making visual tutorials in flash (swf) format for people that understand about the concept but don't work in the technical field and don't have much time to figure things out.

This is not saying that people should be lazzy and not try to learn mambo. This would be a way of sometimes getting things done quick, like the first post in this topic describes do this, then do that...There are a couple a freeware screengrabbers that can output a swf file with recorded screen activity.

Just a thought.....

i guess pixelsouth is already in the move http://www.pixelsoul.net/index.php?o...d=21&Itemid=30
