Default Separate Site for Testing?

Hi -

I'm still new to Mambo and php. As a result one of my concerns is making a change to some file that negatively impacts the site. You may recall my incident from last week where the index.php was corrupted. On one machine, the site worked fine whereas another machine had the front page loop.

Since my site isn't live, I can play and not worry about what the public might see. However, once the site is available, I'm reluctant to change a production file. So, what's the best way to test new modules, components, mambots, versions and so on?

I'm favoring paying for a second site. It seems to me that hosting fees have dropped enough. I've seen some pretty inexpensive ones which could be used for testing. I figure I don't need all the bells and whistles such as 24 hour support for a test site so long as the environment is similar.

Why not just create an additional database and set up mambo in a subfolder? You could even password protect the folder if you want.

If you really want or need to purchase a seperate hosting for mambo...I can help you out very inexpensively. Just let me know how much space you will require and I will give you a quote.

Or you can test in localhost, to save more space on your hosting account.
