index.php redirect : page does not exist

whenever I try to access my site through sitename.com/mambo/index.php I get

The page you are trying to access does not exist.
Please select a page from the main menu.

This wasnt always like this and I assume its a result of a failed component installation in the past. The question is how do i get the index.php to point to main page which is [Home]. I looked around Global Configuration as well as looked through index.php yet failed at fixing this. Any ideas?

I had this issue with my installation as well. I installed joomla to create a video training site which would not be the homepage of the site.

The issue came up when I changed the main menu's home link. I created a new link to a URL, and placed it above the home link, then renamed the home link to "Course Home." Joomla doesn't like that. After a short bit of research, joomla determines the homepage by the first link in the main menu. If that's an external URL, or a URL outside of the joomla file structure, it causes issues.

So, I just renamed my links and put them in an order that joomla likes
