Could you shed some light as of to the server type you're on and
what type you want to move to?
OS control panel phpmyadmin etc.
you can move a site without any problem worst comes to worst,
you can do it via ftp..
but a lot of hosts will do it for you if you ask

I have had the same problem before and most guys from the forum told me to do it through the Backup and restore features which I did.
Everything worked fine but there are certain thing you have to redo again. These things include installation of modules and compponents. Once you install them you'll be rady to go.
Let me point you to an issue I have had as problematic.
When you do your backup and restore, don't use file formats other than zip especially when versions of MOS on new and old servers are not the same.
Hope this helps you as it helped me. This is the easiest way of migrating from local or from another server (host).

Question Re: How do I ... Migrate a website to another server?

OK here's the deal!
I have Red Hat 7.3 installed on a celeron 333mhz with 96M of Ram! <--was the only pc i could get my hands on! lol
I started this website to see if I could learn to use Mambo and also to see what could be done with Mambo!
Now that I have almost finished builduing a product information intranet site for my company! I would have to present the project.
If the project is accepted. I want to be able to migrate to a better server maybe a P3 or P4 with more Ram and a newer Linux distribution.
I have full control over the server and use ftp and ssh to administer it.
I have phpmyadmin installed for mysql <--- No knowledge at all on how mysql works!!!
Could anyone be kind enough to guide me-
Step by step!
like a tutorial? (Mambo related only not Linux! )
If its not too much to ask!?
Thank you.

1. Dump database to file (PHPMyAdmin can do this).
2. Backup all Mambo files.
3. Put Mambo files on new server.
4. Import database (PHPMyAdmin again).
5. Update configuration.php to reflect new live site/path.

I did just this moving from a FreeBSD server to a Linux server and it all worked fabulously.

Thumbs up Re: HOw do I ... Migrate a website to another server?

Thats it!??!
what about the components and modules?? Am I going to have to reeinstall them?

Can I copy the whole mambo directory to the new server?
And also can I change the name of the directory or must it remain the same?
I tried just to see if i could move it on the same server to another directory using the same database and tables and I had some problem with some images that were lost! any ideas if this will happen again on the new server

Or would it be better to install a fresh version of Mambo and then install the components and the modules and then restore the database?
?!?!?!? so many questions, but I'm loving Mambo!!!! more and more each day!
Thank you to everyone for a project wich is soo flexible and makes administration sooo easy!!

No, you back them up along with the rest of the components directory.

That's what you are doing, it's not optional.

It will happen until you update the live site and path in configuration.php.

No.
