Before, it took a whole day to find out how to integrate the great online webphoto album programme Gallery (from Menalto) into Mambo/Joomla. Those were the days of Mambo 4.5 and Gallery 1.4.1! I decided to write a How-To to make it easier for people to use this fantastic photo album inside the fantastic cms (Mambo). Now, more than 2 years later (july 2006), it is time for a rewrite:
A lot has changed: there's Gallery1 and Gallery2. BEWARE: this guide is NOT for Gallery2. Only for Gallery1. We owe many thanks to the developers of Gallery, since Gallery1 v1.5.2 it is a whole lot easier to integrate it into your favourite CMS. Something else has changed too: there's Mambo and there's Joomla. This How-To works for both. Just read Mambo instead of Joomla should you use that one. So here's how you do it:
1) Install Joomla (duh!)
2) Install Gallery. Make sure it works by itself. Take your time to work throught the installation steps. A few do's and don'ts: DO NOT put the gallery files in the directory joomla/components/com_gallery (then this method will not work). Instead, put your gallery files in joomla/gallery. Also, it is clever to create your albums folder in joomla/images/stories/albums. Now you should be able to use any of your gallery pictures in any content-item using the standard joomla media manager (great!

).
3) Test your gallery (upload pictures and stuff). Make sure it works.
4) Now it's time for integration with Joomla (the reason why you're reading this, right?). Log into the Administrator back-end of Joomla. Go to the Joomla 'Installers' and "install" Gallery as a Joomla component. That is the second option in the install-new-component screen. ("install from directory", the one you usually never use!), so DON'T use the option "upload as a package file".
Enter the
directory that has the gallery.xml file in it
(eg. /home/mysite/public_html/gallery/contrib/joomla)
5) Don't leave your admin's backend! Go to the components and choose gallery. Here fill in the location of the gallery component. In other words, the exact directory where gallery is located on the webserver.
(eg. /home/mysite/public_html/gallery)
6) Specify the minimum Joomla admin level required to gain editor access to the gallery. So: what access level your Joomla user should have to be able to upload and manage pictures of Gallery.
7) Edit your main menu and add a new Component item. Select Gallery from the list of available components.
Joomla should do all the work of generating the link for you.
It's not hard, but I couldn't find directions anywhere on the web, hence my post here. Hope it works for you too.
Cheers,
denniz
