Exclamation Possible to build site while showing offline message?

We're building a new site - however, we would like to build the site in the root directory rather than in a subdirectory.

We'd like to show an 'offline' message while we are building the site, but still need to have access to an index (or rename the index temporarily). Is this possible?

We've been trying to build it offline using MSAS, but none of the links work when we click on them on the local site - we always get the "Direct Access to this location is not allowed." message.

Any suggestions?

If you just want to stop casual visitors from seeing your site you could put an index.html file in the root also and it will display that one first by default instead of the index.php file.

You would just have to type in your site name plus index.php to get to the site. Not sure about renaming index.php though.

Why don't you just create a simple index.html file as the holder? If you type in www.mydomain.com you'll get the html file, if you type in www.mydomain.com/index.php you'll get your Mambo site

Here's another thought...

While it's a little more draconian, you could just use .htaccess to require a password for folks to get in. Enter the htaccess userid/password and you're in the main site - from there you can proceed as usual, but it prevents the casual 'browser' from getting in...

Talking Re: Possible to build site while showing offline message?

I agree with a webpage upfront where you need to sign in to see the rest of the website.
However, just a question, talking about MSAS, why do you still to be offline? I build my website with MSAS first before a transfer tothe actual website. Is that how you are doing it?

Thanks.

No, the problem is solved with Joomla. If you use "Preview in new window" in the back-end, the site will show even when the site is offline.
