Is there somewhere a docu which explains variables and functions which can be used in the mambo templates? I mean this variables like $mosConfig_live_site and $mosConfig_sitename (OK, these ones are easy) or the funktions mosLoadModules ('user', -1).

I think there is a lack of explanation for this things. You get always tutorials how you can create a template by using dreamweaver or photoshop. This is nice and helpfull for creating a nice looking site, but where is the functionallity?

Or did I just overlook a essential doku?

you should take a look at www.mamboserver.com; in the "mambo links" menu on the right side you'll find a link to the project documentation; there you'll find a developer documentation and inside this in chapter 1 and chapter 2 you'll find hints for basic and advanced templating and using function etc...
