Hi All,
This morning I returned to work after my Xmas holidays and received the following email from an old friend.
Quote:
I know all of you will probably have your own work to
do over the next few weeks but I've been asked by my
brother if I can help and theres not a lot I can do
over here as I've no computer.
Anyway, as most of you know my brother is in Khao Lak
(the island of Phuket) looking for his friend. From
whathe's told me its been completely destroyed and the
people therehave nothing at all. He askedme if it
would be possible to set up a website for relatives,
friends of people thatare there that are looking for
people. I ahven't got the details just yet but if any
of you could help it would be brilliant

A bit more info - not from my brother but just a few
things I thought of....
It will need three main pages
Missing, Confirmed Deceased, Found (or words to that
effect)
Missing
People need to be able to 'Add a new entry' and have
variables such as name, nationality, last seen, lives
in, appearance at time (clothes etc), location at the
time age, and then have options available for people
for the following - build, hair colour, height, skin
colour, sex etc. Need to be able to upload pictures so
may be a good idea to limit the pixel size of them and
be able to increase it when clicked on. Also contact
number and email as link if poss.I'm sure you can put
these in a better order than me as I'm really rushed
at the moment
Deceased
Names, nationalities, ages. Any chance it could
automatically take the name of the missing list (if
there) when its on the deceased list
Found
Name, nationality, age, hospital
It would be good if you were able to list(and
or)filter these by variable,ie I wanted to see all
Swedish people. All people over 20. you get the
picture. starting from A or Z
Any other info that you think could be useful then
stick it on.
I really appreciate if any of you could help and if
you could speak to each other to get it done it would
be great. If you can sort out a domain as well (Mike
and Nigel) otherwise I'll arrange it so you can stick
it on mine
Ok have a good new year everyone. Thanks again
James

I have spent this morning trying to get this site up and running as quick as possible. As I am sure you are aware, when a project is rushed there may be some important issues overlooked, however the nature of this project does not allow for any delay.
I was hoping that as a community we could pull together and try and get this website up and running and make sure it is as useful as possible for the people involved.
I think we have the basic idea down but there are many things that need to be clearly thought through.
1. Who can add people to the site? (we thought that each user adding a person would need to register).
2. Who can post updates about the person? (there has been a case in England over the last few days where some moron has been sending hoax emails to victims families, how do we avoid this potential misuse?)
3. I have created a baisc language file (as obviously this has not just affected the English speaking world). Can anybody help with translations into as many languages as possible). Also, I have no experience with dealing with different character sets so I don't know what issues may arise with translations).
4. What should be the visual design of the site (I know design is not a major issue but it must be clear and easy to use). Any template designers out there willing to help?
5. Does anyone know of a good donation program which we could add to the site?
6. Once built we would need the site to have as much visibility as possible so anyone with any marketing skills/ideas to spread the word would be very useful.
I am sure that many people out there will be willing to help with this and any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I have had to think of and type this message pretty quickly to get things moving so if I have missed anything out, again please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Mike
