AkoGallery Component -> Batch loader not working

Using ako gallery batch and I can upload images one by one just fine. However when I try to use the batch functionality i get this error:

Filename: Elle/
New Filename: elle0_20040416_-199192876.le/
Upload complete...

Warning: getimagesize(): Read error! in /home/weekend/public_html/members/extras/administrator/components/com_akogallery/admin.akogallery.php on line 313
ERROR: Source file not found!

I have tried shorting the filenames, using fewer files: as few as 4 files, reinstalling the component, 777'd the images dir. Nothing works, I get the same error. Now i am out of ideas. Can anybody help.

Also I noticed that when akogallery saves the images it 644's them. Is this normal?
