Default Search -> Extend to search the contents of Components

Is there a way to use the search engine (within mambo) for components?
For example to search people, telephone numbers,... in the 'AkoStaff' component.

Now it's impossible to use the search engine for the whole site.

Thanks.

So far, the search function for Mambo is only for content. So, you won't be able to use the search engine for third party component. It will require careful planning and a little hack to get them to work together.

For a components search, as far as I know, they are individual searches. One good example is the search function for Simpleboard forum component and (I think) ArtistsDirectory.

Has anyone ever tried to edit the search.php to add additional database tables to search in? Or is this not possible?

Thanks.

You could do that. However, the search result must return the following fields:

href, title, section, created, text, browsernav

I have not looked into Akostaff's table structure. So, if we could return the following field, I believe it can be done - with a lot of care! This is because the search function sits in the core mambo.php file.

I am desperately looking for a "global" search also.
I would of thought that mambo, being a community portal would of included a global search and an advanced search feature as standard!

Is there any expert mambers out there with a solution?

From the Mamboserver.com FAQs:
Quote:
What Mambo isn't!

Mambo Open Source is not a replacement for the Nukes ( PostNuke, PHPNuke etc.). The Nukes are community based portals.

Now whilst Mambo Open Source can be modified, added to etc. to provide this style of site this is not the goal of the project. Mambo Open Source is aimed at the more professional of sites e.g. small to medium business, family or personal sites.
You should be able to modify components/com_search/search.php to search a specific component as well. There was talk on the mamboserver forums by some members of making it so components could "plug into" the search feature, you may want to look over that and see if that is something you want to play around with. It's also on the roadmap for 5.0:

Search Extensions
Create component based search plugins that are usable by both the frontend and backend Administrator
Provide 'advanced' options or filtering for searching
