Default Avatar question

Any idea how to change my avatar's background from white to transparent? What software should I use to edit my picture in order to obtain this?

PS: Hope this is the right forum where to post

To answer your question, most people use PhotoShop for image editing and graphics design. I am poor, but am very happy with the results I get from Serif products, such as PhotoPlus, which is what I used to transform your avatar.
