Talking Mambers new look :)

Is it just me or has the logo been re-done? Looks great

Good to see some customisations happening around here, I really like the features and it shows off what VBB can do. The colours will even go with the new 4.6 logo. Just when I'd gotten to like orange

I still think VBB was a silly choice for the official forums, but for an independent site that is specifically for messages it makes sense.

Looking forward to a whole new look, after all Arthur doesn't have to work on the release of 4.6 as well

What's wrong with VBB? Not that I'm flaming, but curious as I'm evaluating BB systems at the moment.

There's nothing wrong with VB, except that it's not open source so it's harder to integrate into MOS even if you wanted to.

I'm holding out for SMF to be released for Mambo, it has many features and it's own development community. Should be coming out soon I think.

Do some research before deciding on a forum s/w, it's not a small decision if you are planning to setup for the long term.

Simpleboard has the advantage of being fully integrated into MOS, although at this early stage of development is somewhat simple in comparison to other bbs.

If you want to run VB for mambo, then you'll have to pay for it and run it seperately to your mambo site or in a wrapper component.

Or you could just not have a forum, they just cause trouble

Actually I'm after a setup similar to mamboportal, whereby the forum is a seperate site (i.e. this one!).

So integration within my Mambo site as such isn't so important, although I am very interested in the 'Last 5' topics module display on the main site. Does anyone know how this works, given that the forum isn't part of the Mambo site as such? Is the module available, and is it for VBB only?

Also, Mambo compatibility aside, is there a clear 'winner' when it comes to forum scripts? Or is it more of a religious debate?

Yes, I know it, because I coded it...

Actually vB comes with a very powerfull data exportation modul. I can serve RSS, XML and Javascript. You can choose the number of threads and the forums you would like to see. I connected this vB modul with a Mambo modul. It is available for download at Mamboportal.com (Last Mambers.com Topics or something like that).

If you search for a Mambo forum, see Forum Test: Simpleboard vs Loudmouth.

If you search for a forum in general, there are only a few worth taking a look at. These are:

vBulletin (commercial)
Invisionboard (commercial)
phpBB (open source)
SimpleMachines (open source)

All others are nice too, but can't equal the above. If you ask me, the above order would be my recommendation, but others might see this different. It also depends on what you need.

The commercial forums do come with perfect support. The vB support team mails you back with a first solution in under an hour. Perfect for proffesional systems.

The open source forums do have a large supporting community behind them. So you get thousands of addons and have all languages available.

You should also take a look at Big Boards, if you plan to start a larger community: http://www.big-boards.com/

Community dramas aside, which I have realised are actually a growth factor in Open Source development, you are doing an excellent job Arthur

You've got a great way with words and your mamboportal content is really shaping up to be an important viewpoint for the MOS community.

I even liked your controversial 4.6 CVS reviews, even though it did seem to be fishing for controversy. Not that there's anything wrong with that in the wide world of web journalism

Good work sticking with what you believe in, keep it up!

Cheers,

Damian

Thanks! There are several ways to keep the fire burning. Sometimes I use small branches, sometimes I through in a gallon of oil...
