I think you'll find that using someone's/anyone's copyrighted material for educational purposes is completely legal, as is using it for many other non-commercial purposes.
And one could easily get around the bandwidth issue by simply downloading a copyrighted image to their own server.
As a creative person, I definitely want to protect copyright. But the copyright laws are the law.
There's also the question of whether or not copyrights are protected from one country to another. Some countries still do not have any sort of copyright laws. Trying to stop someone in Belize from using your pictures might be frustratingly fruitless.
That said, I also believe it's within the right of the copyright owner to ask that a certain use of their images be stopped.
I think lior_avr deserves a thank you for removing the photos. And some of you deserve less than that for your rather stingy attitudes.
