Help Needed - Why Open Source

Long time Mambo user, first time poster.

I'm writing an article for the Economist in respone to one of my boss's opinions. He simply cannot understand the driving force behind open source. Therefore, I'd like to gather your opinions on the following questions. I certainly have my own ideas, but I'd like to be completely not biased.

What value does open source have to your career or you personally?

What contribution do you think the open source community provides to the economy, business or the world?

On average, how many hours do you believe you spend on open source activites? [Coding, contribution, commenting, reading.]
