Joomla! 1.0 Released

I hope that this isnt breaking a rule, but I think that this is relevant.


OSM has released Joomla! 1.0

Joomla!’s multi-award-winning team of developers today released version 1.0 of Joomla!.

The team, which developed the world’s most popular Open Source content management system, have been working their magic since the Joomla! brand was announced — just 17 days ago.

Lead developer Andrew Eddie praised the development team and the Joomla! community for their work and support.

“Baby Joomla! has cut its first tooth with the release of Joomla! v1.0,” he said. “This will be the first milestone in the Joomla! story … everyone knows how important this day is, so everyone should celebrate the freedom.”

Joomla! website creation software is released under GNU GPL. Joomla! 1.0 is now available for download at developer.joomla.org.

So this means there will not be a 5.0?

And I went on the demo at Joomla.org, and the demo was exactly the same, they just changed the names on the images from mambo to Joomla... So its basically just a name change?

Thanks Stingrey. I too was wondering what the changes were. I now understand better.

I appreciate all of the work that goes into this baby. I have downloaded 1.0.2 and installed on my home server. I noticed that all mambots,modules,components and templates work.

Will there come a day when mambo stuff does not work in joomla?

Is there an easy way to install joomla over mambo and retain all of my current hacks, modules and components intact?

Maybe Im missing the required reading?

Yes at some point when both release major version e.g. Mambo 4.5.4 and 1.2 or 1.3 you will probably see Mambo/Joomla components lose their interoperability.

This will not be because of any intentional aim of either Dev team, simply the normal course of events as they pursue different roadmaps.

However, it is likely that Joomla will remain closer to the way existing Mambo components operate as Joomla is developed by the same team that used to create Mambo.
The Mambo team on the otherhand is completely brand new and thus will more than likely have their own ideas on how to do things, thus moving away from the original 'Mambo' way of doing things - which is now the Joomla way of doing things.

You can install Joomla over Mambo for the main part without losing the interoperability of existng components and modules.
Hacks on the other hand will be lost, but this woudl be the case even if there was a Mambo 4.5.2.4 release.

Should of course note that whenever you do any sort of hacking, patching, upgrade or conversion work, you should always backup your database and where possible your files.


The optimal situation is having your site mirrored/backed up locally and testing patch/upgrade/conversion work on your local system first, to test out what issues might crop up.
Of course even then this may not iron out all issues, as your local server environment is usaally different from your server environemnt.

Another method is to have a complete copy of your site in a subdomain and test patch/upgrade/conversion on that system.


I guess what I am trying to highlight, is that although the Team makes it a priority to maintain interoperability between point releases (e.g. 1.0.1, 1.0.2, etc) some bug fixes may have unintended consequences that can affect 3rd party components.

So always take necessary safety measures - one can never be too safe.

I've read through the Joomla! About, FAQ and Roadmap pages, and I've scanned the forum, but I don't see any form of answer to "Why rebrand Mambo to Joomla!?"

Why should I be interested? Why should I move over to Joomla! (I presume because I'll have the same fine team of former Mambo developers?) Mambo comes bundled with my VPS hosting plan. What are the compelling reasons (maybe only in the future?) to switch?

Maybe this isn't the place, but maybe someone can tell me where to look to start discerning Mambo's future? Will the new team be able to develop it as well (or better!) than the old?

When, if ever, are we likely to see a fully xhtml, tableless CMS (either Mambo or Joomla!)?
