I just installed this new component and it looks very nice, but it doesn't do anything. It doesn't search at all.

I take my words back. It appears that if MySQL is lower than 4.0.14 (which is in my case) you have to set "Use fulltext search" to "No" otherwise component doesn't work at all. So, it DOES work.
