Users Component Under Development

Hi All,

Over the last few months I've been using mambo and have been frustrated by the user component that is included in the core of mambo. I've experiemented with numerous solutions such as userlist, user_extended, phil-a-form, user_approver, etc but have not found what I'm looking for. As a result I've decided to create my own users component. I have seen posts on various forums that indicate I'm not the only one that would like a more robust user component and would like to get suggestions, ideas, etc so that this component will be useful to the whole mambo community. I hope to have a beta version out in the next couple of weeks but this is a list of the features I'm thinking of:

User Profile: Page users can go to to maintain information their own information and view the details of others like icq, aim, msnm, yim, website address, mailing address, interests, bio, picture/avatar, age, gender, etc. This would have all the normal functionality of a user profile like most BB systems have.

User List/Search: This was inspired by the original userlist page with many more features and search criteria.

Integrations: Currently I've only really considered integrating with the myPMS so allow for private messaging from a users profile. I'm open to other suggestions for integration points.

Registration Approval: Incorporate an approval step if required by a site admin.

Configurable Email Templates: Allow the admin to define the text of the emails sent to users upon approval.

Subscription: This will all for setting up a pay based subscription site that will require a credit card transaction as part of the registration process. The only credit card processor that I'm planning on integrating with is Authorize.net but do plan to make the component extensible so other cc processors could be added (i.e. paypal, verisign, etc).

Configuration: This component will include a comprehensive configuration section in the administrator to allow you to control what fields you want to use, which will be required, whether to integrate with myPM, how many users per page in the user list, etc.

One of the fundamental issues I've contemplated with doing this extensive of a user component is what do with with the core component. Unless someone can persued me otherwise I'm going to keep my component just that, a component and not a hack of existing pages that the user has to replace/maintain after every release/upgrade. As a results there will be one component, that will require several menu items and a module for login/registration. I'm considering adding a step in the install or a little utility or script that will auto add the menu items. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this one.

Please let me know what you think and any thing else you'd like to see. I know there are lots of great ideas that I haven't thought/read of yet.

I do plan on adding this component on MOSForge.net, the whole Forge concept is a little new to me so I'm poking around at it now.

Hear, hear - I think this component would be invaluable. The base functionality in the user component is way too basic. Count me in for testing.

If everyone with skills got together on this I am sure we could get it done. I have some basic PHP MySql skills, I have written documentation, something that is lacking in a lot of comps, and I can do artwork. I agree MosForge might be a good start for colaboration.
We might want to start by looking at existing user profiles, Yahoo PHPBB
I have not looked at the one on this forum other than to change my avatar.

We need an extended user profile too. I would like to see everything you mentioned so far, but would also like news/content hooked in too so that a user could narrow his data feeds down to his specific areas of interest. This has a wide scope and would probably have to involve more components by getting them to check the users profile. The menu system for example. If a users profile says he is interested in certain categories then it would be nice if the menu system only showed those. The profile should be used to personalise the users window into the portals content.

A funny little thing I would like to see also, is an individual guestbook and diary, so users can communicate and share his/hers tought, aswell a individual image gallery... wohaaa, this is a lot´of work, i cannot code php very well, but i'm an kick *** designer ;)

excelent!! you can see my imlist component if you want to reuse some of it functionality... (it display a list of user's IMs (msn, icq..etc) asking the users to enter their details, it is mypmsII integrated)

I can do testing and feature enhancing once a foundation is placed since my php coding abilities are basic. I can also colaborate in the spanish translation (mexican spanish, that is!)

Would like also to have users groups and to limit access to content based on groups.
This maybe a great component!

Thanks for your support! Development is still well underway, we've decided to make a few changes that weren't originally planned which is why its taking longer then a couple of weeks but the changes are well worth the wait.

fede/Atrialis/MamboStudio - I'll definately take you up on the translations. PM me with email addresses and I'll contact you closer to our beta release so you can begin translations.
Only thing we've got now is dutch and English :cool:

I run a chatroom site at www.groovechat.net and just installed the Partystaff component this week. It has several of the items you're discussing. The user can write a biography, upload a photo, list their website address. Other users can view and write comments on them. It's a good start for what I need but having the additional functionality would be great. I would be willing to assist in whatever way I can.

:D woooohaaaa i totally missed this one i have been waiting for the same a long time ;) now.. But perhaps it is best to have an own instant messaging system since the My Pms 2 is nice but far from perfect, i have seen post from the developer that My Pms 2 pro is going to come but so far i have not seen it, and it was a while ago...
since instant messaging must come with a limit offcourse or the server will have me for lunch ;) :eek:

Just a quick updated. The module is taking longer then initally reported due to some strategic changes we've decided to make which will make the component much more extensible, usable and desirable to all. I'm monitoring the thread and am encouraged by everyones enthusiasm. I'll keep you posted from time to time.

I can tell you guy's a lot of thinking has gone into the component..

Mambojoe allready had a working component..

Then i came along with total different needs and we decided to make the whole component customisable.. wich is the strategic change Mambojoe is talking about.. we called this strategic change 'the array project'..

I have seen the results, on the admin end you can create any question type of field you like.. from a radio button to dropdown to whatever.. You can now create as many fields with as many crazy unusual questions as you like..

This is whats taking a bit longer, but believe me its all worth it!!

I have posted a Thread in this forum regarding a New Component.
After i have read this thread, i think we are thinking a litle similar.

What i'm thinking of is the possibilities for users to get their own replicated page ( Editable with info, links, news, etc... )
and their own link: ww.yourdomain.com/your username

Possibility to recruit / Refer ( Refferalsystem ) with their own page ( new members can register there )
Members can see how many personal refferals they have and how many refferals it is several levels below them.... ( Possibility to change how many levels showing )
This is to promote people who do a good job recruiting new members.
This is almost like MLM.... and is a very powerful way to promote things...

I have been searching the net for Scripts like that, but havent found anyone i think is good enough.
Have a lot of good ideas though :) and know exactly what i want, but cant really make it..... :(

So if you are thinking in these directions...please let me know.

This sounds great! have you thought of this..
1. User has his/her own images folder which they can use for their avatar ex: /images/user/user1.jpg
2. Administrator could overide their avatar with the one they upload. ex: /images/admin/pic.jpg. Which mean if admin already assign the picture to that user then he/she cannot change the image. If the admin does not assign the picture then it default to user image, else default to nopic.jpg
It just a thought! I'm not a great developer or graphic designer, but i can do the beta test for you. Thanks

Update:

I'm currently testing another dev release, wich is really looking good!

When i found all the bugs i can find in a reasonable amount of time, the test team will get their first beta to find the rest!

However, we still do not have an estimate on when this will happen. But i felt comfortable enough to make this note about the development progress made.

On mosforge you can take a look at the buglist and you should basicly either see it growing or shrinking. When its shrinking (solved) the time should be near for the first beta test group to test. ( http://mamboforge.net/projects/userextras )

one thin I don't know is it a bug or server but I tried on your site also

it takes too long to pick or upload the image and there is no confirmation page or refresh that the upload or choice is done

Great Idea! I'm on the hunt for an integrated mailing list manager as well. One with user definable templates that track opt-ins and opt-outs. Integration with the site database would be killer!
