hey all:

so i've been searching for a good directory that I can use sort of like a Yellow Pages for local businesses. since i haven't found anything and phil taylor has taken his directory down from sale, i was looking to build my own. so far i have gotten the following ideas about what information it should hold and features it should have.

What information needs to be stored?

Name of Business
Address
Neighborhood
Phone #
Website
Hours of Operation
Type of Business

Should be...
- searchable
- able to sort by name/avg. rating
- AkoComment integradable
- registered users should be able to add a business

Any suggestions? Is this even possible to do?

Someone wrote a directory component a few months ago that was GPL...but I can't find it anywhere. I think I have it on my machine at work. If you can wait until Tuesday, I will send it to you. If nothing else, you can look at how it is written, or maybe even build from what he already has.

wow, thanks...i can wait till tuesday, we all know my component wouldn't be done by then anyway. thanks for all your help once again though, my site wouldn't be nearly complete if you never helped me...

If you're going to have users add their own businesses to the Directory, I recommend you build a review process whereby the Admin can review all new entries before being posted, similar to AkoComments. Otherwise, people are going to post outlandish business descriptions about their own businesses.

Recommendations:
- Allow users to upload a business logo
- Most importantly, I'd include a paid sponsored-link or priority position system in the Directory, where users can move their ads to the top of their Categories. Integrate some kind of PayPal payment system where users can buy priority listings one a weekly or monthly basis.

Thanks, I will def. be keeping the review process in mind.

I like the logo idea a lot. And the 2nd idea is very good as well, the only thing is this is going to be my first component so it will be a very long time before i get this finished. i'm probably going to be snipping from other components...but if anyone would like to help it'd be appreciated ;)

BTW. Mark the link in your signature is broken :(

BTW. Mark the link in your signature is broken :(

How many times did you actually click on it before drawing that conclusion???? ;)

Sorry to disappoint you...but I can't find the zip file anywhere. I'm not 100% sure I downloaded it...maybe I just saw it on a demo site. The guy posted it on the mamboserver.com forums...but I can't find hide nor hair of it now. What a shame.

I recommend you look at the following components for ideas:

moskools
mambads
partystaff
accombo
wines
artistdirectory

I can also set you up with access to a demo of Phil's directory component if you want to eval the functionality of it. Sorry I can't do more to help you.

dknight, this looks VERY good!
I'd have bought it if it was customizable for all texts!
(to be used to present for example software or websites..)
Looks great :)

I would strongly recommend http://scripts.webmastersite.net/wsnlinks/

I was looking for a more robust web-links component for Mambo, something that would compare to what the Nuke modules have. With review, comment, rate user recommend links etc.

wsnlinks has all that and more. Plus it integrates into a number of different CMS's including Mambo. Meaning userlogin is shared.

I've got it installed and working, now I just have to figure out how to get it to work within Mambo.

O and theres a free version which is very strong and does all this, but you have to keep the 'powered by' info or you can buy it for $35.

Hi,

I was looking for a links component too, and have seen all of them (well, i think so....)
But after seeing wsn's, I am really impressed!!!

I am trying to figure out how it could be integrated into MAMBO (folder /integration/mambo.php, but without succes... Any idea...???

Thanks in advance!

How about using the wrapper? I think that might work.

I am using WSNLinks for the links directory on my Mambo site, You can see it in use at www.westchester.com/guide with www.westchester.com being the main Mambo site.

WSNLinks can use the Mambo user table without any problem. When using WSNLinks with Mambo, you must edit the templates to use the Mambo registration page and Edit Profile pages. Using the WNSLinks login page works just fine.

The only remaining issue I have is getting WSNLinks to recognize Mambo cookies, an issue which I've posted threads on before. WSNLinks uses separate cookies for userid and password, whereas Mambo uses one cookie for a whole host of things. I've asked for help, even posted offers to pay programmers to figure it out. Nothing so far.

So right now users would have to login (a second time) into my WSNLinks site if they want to add a link or suggest a category. That's not a showstopper for me. WSNLinks works very nicely.

with www.westchester.com being the main Mambo site.
Completely unrelated to this thread (sorry).

But its nice to see my DNL modules being implemented the way i envisaged them being used :)

Anyway, reason for the post is to say that i got your Feature Request for the Display News modules, that they have the ability to specificy more than one, section or category to be dsiplayed. This is now a ability you will have in 1-3, which will be released in the next few hours. I am currently cleaning up the code as I post.

Keep you eye out on an announcement in the mamboserver forums soon ;)

Any help at all?

If you have the skills could you port this?

DirectoryForNuke (http://www.jannetta.com)

or this:

phpDirectory ( http://demo.cybergl.co.id/dir0.0.1/)

You know what, that's crazy enough it just might work- good suggestion!
Do you have any examples of people using it for that?
Could I customize from the admin panel so it doesn't show the "price" field, and other things that would look rather wierd in a "yellow pages" module?

Gazounds! 0.9 with advanced search!!! Now I am so excited I don't know what to do with myself...
I can think of about elevendy billion good uses for this product now. I read your license for Hot Property to mean that you can't install it on multiple mambo installations with 1 license (obviously for good reason).

My question is, if I want to use Hot Property in two different ways on my one site within 1 mambo installation, is that :
a) Possible (technically - or does each installation require it's own mambo shell)
b) Allowed with the license

DKnight,
Can you answer us if HotProperty would work well as a business directory? Would it require heavy modding? Do you know of anyone that is currently using it like that?

Thanks.

Hi mysunsite,

I apologize for not replying to your post. Can't seem to get notification here from Mambers.com

As long as you install Hot Property in ONE Mambo website, you can use it for multiple purposes. Note that this apply to one installation of Hot Property only. Due to limitations of MOS, you're not able to install HP twice in a same MOS website.

In Hot Property version 0.9, you can completely remove and re-order CORE fields. ie: you can remove the price field by simply unpublishing it from the "Extra Fields" section.

There is whole lot more new features in version 0.9. Stay tuned!

Best Regards,
CY @ Mosets.com

Hi dnkinght,
I use Mambo for my websites and now I am ready to create a new real-estate web site. I saw your component and it looks pretty good! How many listings can this software handle? I'm going to have more than 3000 listinings, will I have any problem?

Can you tell us when the new version (0.9)will be released?

Editing Accombo Sleeps Section

I was wondering if any of you know the answer this this one.

Hi, I am using accombo for a venues directory and the sleeps section I want to change to capacity.

Does anyone know how to change the sleeps section so it can be e.g. 50, 100, 150 instead of 1 to 20?

The page in question where I can change this would be great.

Thanks in advance !!

Great ideias, especially the prioritie list .
I also would sugest that some fields (for exemple the website address or the telephone of the company) could only be viewed to registered users... (to the pubic it could be view the rest of the information..)
Buy the way... There was any develpment on this, basead on 4.5.0 ?

Aparently Phil Taylor has done the job (Mos Directory version 2 ):

from the http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?p=86485

annouces it in the

http://www.blueflameit.ltd.uk/Product_Info/Mambo_Products/mosDirectory_-_Coming_Soon!/

So it seams that will work only for the 4.5.1 version... :(
and for a price of 39.99 GBP (about 60 euros )

any ideias for the 4.5 (version 1.0.9) ??
