Zoom Gallery not working, alternatives?

Hi I have this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: openconnectionwithreturn() in /public_html/mambo/components/com_zoom/classes/zoom.class.php on line 385

and I've seen it in another thread, but they say it's because it doesn't work with 4.5.1.
However I've seen people here are using it 4.5.1. so I'm wondering,
is there a way to fix this?
Have I got something missconfigured?

Also, if I can't get it running what is the best other gallery I can use?

I've got zoom gallery working fine with 4.5.1
I got it all working by running
chmod -R 755 *

what does openconnectionwithreturn() do? it seems to cause a common error when trying to use a component from 4.5 for 4.5.1

I checked the CHMOD settings and I have 777 so that should not be the problem.

I have two problems when scanning a directory for a gallery.

One thing is that it seems it's not taking the directory path, it's trying to parse it as an url. Then if I put the full url to the directory, it tells me it's empty.
I have set the directory chmod writeble.

I was having problems with my ako gallery as well, it allowed to me to upload the photos, but the thumbs didnt work, no matter that GD i put
