IE_sparks is on a distinguished road
Default Upgrading from Mambo 4.5 (1.0.5) to Joomla 1.0.12

So here's my problem. I've got a site for a sports group that was set up using fantastico two years ago, but I wasn't the admin for a year and a bit. End result, database is slightly mangled when I take over again. I repair as much as I can, but it's still not perfect.

Also, it's Mambo 4.5 (1.0.5) and frankly, it's creaky. I want to upgrade to the latest version of Joomla and I don't have shell access.

As you can guess, I'm getting headaches trying to think of a safe way to do this. I'm almost leaning towards copying content from the live site to a local fresh joomla install then deploying that installation to the live server. Almost. I'm not quite up to that much work just yet though.

So has anyone got any suggestions or bright ideas?
Please?
