I'm new to this, so be gentle!

Basically, I've got a website that I want to install Joomla onto. So far, it's all done in XHTML with Dreamweaver, and I'm updating it manually.

What I want to do is install Joomla onto the site and get the PHP into some existing XHTML templates, then re-upload my content (but that's not specifically what I'm asking about here).

My question is, do I need to install and configure Joomla on the web space itself, or can I do it on my hard drive and then just upload all the files?
